Was "Suicide Squad" a Suicide Mission? - Spoiler Free Review

Suicide Squad was a movie I was extremely excited about – we have Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Killer Croc, just to name a few, that are a part of the squad. The trailer for Suicide Squad was epic, it lured me in and those who’ve never heard of the DC characters who feature in the film. However, the actual movie was a hot mess. Plot holes are everywhere, unnecessary scenes are included, relationships within the movie don’t even seem real and so much more.

When the movie starts we only get detailed backstories of 2 characters who are a part of the squad – Deadshot and Harley Quinn and that’s about it. We get a short story on the Enchantress but we still know little about her. I love Cara Delevingne, I loved her performance in Paper Towns but her performance in this movie
was poor. Maybe it was the script. I wasn’t sold on her ‘relationship’ or her character June Moon. But when she was Enchantress, her performance was somewhat better.

Jared Leto as The Joker started out great but then went downhill. I just didn’t like the whole ‘Next Generation’ look. Heath Ledger will always have a memorising Joker, he was just thrilling to watch and his performance is one yet to be lived up to. I wish the Suicide Squad didn’t change The Joker’s mannerisms, it was just very out of the box from the previous Joker. The Joker in the movie is also ‘detached’ from the main storyline, he’s just there and doesn’t really affect the plot greatly. He has his own agenda and that’s trying to get Harley Quinn back. I do think that if Jared Leto were to have more scenes in the movie he would have grown on me. He just didn’t ‘fit’ in the ‘look’ of the film. I hope in the future we see more of the Joker and witness how insane he is and how he plays with peoples minds.

Amanda Waller played by the queen, Viola Davis from How to Get Away with Murder, was interesting to watch. As this version of my Suicide Squad review is spoiler free, I’ll just say that I didn’t like Amanda or the way she worked. This character basically told the audience that women in power are not good.

Captain Boomerang played by Jai Courtney was unusual. The character had some fun parts but overall his back story wasn’t that long, we learn about his fetish but not how he became ‘Captain Boomerang’. His movement and dialogue in the movie felt weird, he’d do one thing and do the opposite the next. Killer Croc didn’t even have that much dialogue in the film and when he did all his lines felt forced and when they were meant to be funny the delivery was sloppy or really slow. Also the ‘racial stereotyping’ was ridiculous, to the way he talks and dresses. At one point he even mentions BET. Katana also didn’t have a big introduction, she just rocks up late when the squad deploys to the city where they'll have to fight 'evil'. I wish they had epic fighting scenes with Katana. Actually I wish they had better fight scenes overall. One of my favourite characters from watching the movie was El Diablo. He literally had so much potential in the movie though but Suicide Squad doesn’t really explore this character until the near end of the movie. His true form was also really cool and I was pretty much fascinated by him and the way he was fighting.

I personally feel like Suicide Squad should have been released next year to improve on the CGI, the storyline, the cuts & transitions, the dialogue and so much more. The storyline was full of plot holes and unanswered questions. The movie heavily relied on the audience to have previous knowledge of the characters and the DC universe. The dialogue in most scenes felt unnatural. Also the placement of music in the film was unquestionably not thought out well. We literally just have random music, which are great hits, that are just thrown in throughout the film, not even bothering to set the right mood in the scenes. Like WHAT DO YOU MEAN? WHY IS THIS MUSIC ON? HOW DO WE TURN IT OFF? We had Eminem on at one point WHICH DIDN’T SUIT THE SCENE and it was very awkward. I was so confused. The only time the music ever suit a scene, or ever felt ‘natural’ was at the very end, when the credits came on.

Suicide Squad was basically Deadshot and Harley Quinn’s movie. They owned the whole thing. Harley Quinn is however sexually objectified in the movie and we even have a scene when she’s dressing herself and everyone around her stops to watch. Like, okay? At one point in the movie it’s raining (and stops immediately in the next scene?) and she’s sitting on a car all drenched her shirt somewhat see through.

I really want to love DC Extended Universe movies, I want to say, yeah, this movie is awesome, it’s epic, worth your money. But I can’t, I haven’t yet. Suicide Squad was okay and fun, but it wasn’t amazing, it just didn’t live up to its trailer. It failed to deliver, I was basically robbed, that’s how poorly the movie was put together. It had so much potential to really introduce these characters and to provide a detailed back story and how they came to be but this didn’t happen. I would watch Suicide Squad again though because of the nostalgia but that’s about it. If I were to rate the movie, I’d give it 2.5 stars out of 5. Don’t get me wrong, Suicide Squad had its moments which were great to watch but overall, it missed the mark. So I guess this is where I’ll end my spoiler free review.
